AUSTRALIA COUNTRY GUIDE
A practical guide to choosing a lawful pathway, understanding work and tax, and testing whether city, regional or FIFO life fits the move you actually want.
QUICK OVERVIEW
Australia can suit professionals, skilled workers, younger working travellers and people joining family. It is less suited to improvised long stays: work rights, healthcare, tax residence and distance should be understood before committing to the move.
Distance, housing, climate and working rights matter as much as beaches, salaries and space.
Strong wages, English-speaking workplaces, varied cities and access to extraordinary landscapes are genuine advantages. The counterweight is expensive housing, long travel, a demanding visa system and the fact that an attractive job advert does not itself create a right to work.
Large professional, healthcare, construction, resources and service economies.
Outdoor space, public services and very different city and regional lifestyles.
Many skilled and remote-site roles pay well, but compare them with housing and travel costs.
Trips to Europe are long and costly; time-zone overlap with UK teams is limited.
Best suited to: people who choose the pathway and employment market first, then select the state and city around the real opportunity.
Start with age, occupation, employer sponsorship and whether the move is temporary or permanent.
Visit, work temporarily, join an employer, study or settle.
Age, passport, occupation, skills, English and health.
Independent points, nomination, sponsor or family.
Work limits, location, employer and pathway onward.
Most visa applications are managed online. The exact evidence and procedure depend on the subclass and the applicant’s circumstances.
Use the official starting point rather than a job-board promise or old migration article.
Explore official visas ↗Create, lodge and manage eligible applications through the Department’s online service.
Open ImmiAccount ↗Paid Australian immigration assistance should come from a registered migration agent or Australian legal practitioner.
Search the OMARA register ↗A visitor stay, remote work, Australian employment and permanent skilled migration are different legal positions.
Before working physically from Australia, confirm the visa conditions, written employer permission, Australian employment and tax consequences, insurance and any registration required for the occupation.
The employer must check work rights and meet Australian workplace law. Sponsorship, where needed, is a formal immigration process rather than an informal benefit.
There is no general Australian digital-nomad visa. A foreign contract does not automatically authorise work performed in Australia or remove Australian tax and employer questions.
Test the visa, role, roster, mobilisation point, tickets and physical realities before chasing the headline salary.
FIFO teams fly from a nominated mobilisation city to a remote mine, energy, construction or support site for a rostered swing, then return for rest. Roles range from engineering, trades and machinery operation to safety, laboratories, catering, cleaning, administration and health.
There is no separate “FIFO visa”. Applications go to Australia’s Department of Home Affairs, normally online through ImmiAccount. A recruiter can help find a role, but cannot grant work rights.
The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) can allow temporary FIFO work within its conditions. You do not need employer sponsorship for this route. For a first Working Holiday visa, apply online from outside Australia and meet the passport, funds, health and other requirements.
The usual six-month limit with one employer still matters; check whether an exemption or permission applies to the actual work. A visa does not guarantee a FIFO job.
First Working Holiday visa: eligibility and application ↗The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is one route for suitably skilled workers with a sponsoring employer. Ask the employer whether it will sponsor your specific occupation and which stream applies. The employer handles sponsorship and nomination; you submit the linked visa application through ImmiAccount with the required evidence.
Check occupation eligibility, skills, experience, English, salary and other requirements. A general FIFO vacancy or entry-level camp job does not automatically qualify for sponsorship.
Skills in Demand visa: official routes ↗Eligible applicants may consider subclasses 189, 190 or 491. These involve occupation and skills requirements, points and an invitation; state nomination or eligible family sponsorship may also be relevant. Age limits apply.
Submit an expression of interest through SkillSelect first. If invited, follow the invitation to lodge the visa application through ImmiAccount. An expression of interest gives no work rights. For a regional route, check both the home base and work locations against the visa conditions.
Start with SkillSelect guidance ↗Read the exact visa checklist before paying fees. Confirm who will lodge each part, keep the application reference, and wait for the necessary work permission before starting the job.

Experience, trade recognition and licences.
Medical, drug and alcohol, police and safety checks.
Long shifts, isolation, heat, fatigue and time away.
Jobs and Skills Australia reports that mining employment is especially concentrated in Western Australia and Queensland. High median earnings reflect demanding skills, rosters and locations; they are not a guaranteed entry salary.
Pilbara, Goldfields and other operations commonly mobilise through Perth.
Bowen Basin and regional operations may use Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville or Mackay.
Energy, construction, maintenance, camp services and healthcare also use remote rosters.
Use an official labour-market source, major job board, specialist recruiters and employer career pages. Never pay a recruiter for a job or send identity documents to an unverified contact.
Compare the employing entity, contract and site—not just the advert.
WorkPac ↗Brunel ↗Chandler Macleod ↗Tax residence is not decided by the visa label or the 183-day test alone.
The resides test is primary, with statutory tests including domicile and 183 days. A person can become resident before day 183 or remain foreign resident despite a simple day count. Facts, home, routine and intention matter.
Behaviour, presence, family, business and living arrangements are considered together.
This can matter particularly for Australians leaving, but domicile questions are technical.
The test includes exceptions involving usual place of abode and intention.
An Australian resident for tax purposes generally declares Australian and foreign income. Foreign residents generally declare Australian-source income. Temporary-resident rules and tax treaties can alter treatment, so pensions, investments, remote salary and property income need individual review.
Planning pointObtain advice before the move or first Australian workday where significant overseas income, pensions, trusts, companies or property are involved.

Build an Australian-dollar system with a tested route for overseas income, transfers and emergencies.
An Australian-dollar account simplifies salary, rent, bills and local card use. Keep a tested overseas account or transfer provider and a separate emergency reserve.
For salary, PayID, direct debits, rent and local spending.
Compare total AUD received after rate margin and fees.
Keep another card, provider and accessible reserve.
Banks set their own onboarding and non-resident policies. Prepare evidence and update it when circumstances change.
Medicare eligibility, the UK reciprocal pathway and private cover each solve different problems.
Permanent residents and certain visa holders may qualify for Medicare under domestic rules. Eligible UK visitors may instead enrol for medically necessary care under the UK–Australia Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.
Services Australia states that an eligible person must have been living in the United Kingdom before arriving. A British passport alone does not establish this. Take a valid Australian visa, UK passport and evidence of UK residence; a GHIC or UK-issued EHIC can help prove entitlement. Enrol through Medicare before or after treatment.
The pathway can cover medically necessary out-of-hospital treatment, treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and some PBS medicines. It does not reproduce the NHS and normally excludes ambulance, most dental care, repatriation and many gaps or charges.
Citizens, permanent residents and specified applicants or visa holders may qualify under Australian rules.
Limited medically necessary treatment for an eligible person who was living in the UK before arrival.
Some visa holders need suitable health insurance and cannot rely on Medicare.
Useful for ambulance, private treatment, evacuation, exclusions and costs outside reciprocal cover.
Do not cancel existing cover until Australian entitlement is confirmed and usable.
Chris uses Pacific Prime as the broker for his own international medical insurance. That first-hand experience is relevant to comparing international policies, but it is not presented as an Australia-specific recommendation or a guarantee of another customer’s outcome.
Readers should verify Medicare interaction, visa suitability, exclusions, remote-area treatment, evacuation and renewal costs for their circumstances.
Ambulance charging and coverage vary by state and circumstance. Medicare generally does not cover ambulance, making this a material insurance check.
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and regional Australia produce very different budgets and opportunities.
Sydney and Melbourne offer large professional markets but expensive housing. Brisbane combines growth with humidity and flood exposure. Perth is central to many WA resources careers and FIFO mobilisation. Adelaide offers a smaller, more manageable capital with ready access to the coast and surrounding wine regions. Regional centres can reduce some costs while increasing car dependence and distance from services.
Largest corporate market; high rent and long commutes.
Diverse economy, culture and variable weather.
Growing market and access to Queensland; heat and flood checks matter.
Resources gateway with major FIFO links; isolated from eastern cities.
A compact capital with defence, health, education, manufacturing and professional work alongside an accessible lifestyle.
Possible skilled and visa advantages, but services and jobs vary sharply.
Chris previously worked in Adelaide, so the city will also feature in his developing Australia notes. Personal observations will be kept separate from current housing, employment and migration guidance.
One adult renting a modest one-bedroom home, cooking regularly and using public transport without owning a car. The rent assumption is A$600 per week × 52 ÷ 12. City, suburb and property type can change this substantially; remote locations are not necessarily cheaper.
These are worked planning assumptions from PotExp Pathways, not current market averages or quoted prices. Replace each allowance with local listings and personal quotes before committing.
| Cost category | Example allowance |
|---|---|
| Rent: one-bedroom home | A$2,600 |
| Electricity, water and gas | A$200 |
| Home internet and mobile | A$110 |
| Groceries and household essentials | A$500 |
| Local transport | A$180 |
| Eating out, leisure and personal spending | A$300 |
| Contingency reserve | A$310 |
| Monthly subtotal | A$4,200 |
Add your healthcare costs: private insurance, prescriptions, dental care and treatment charges depend on age, entitlement and cover. Obtain a personal quote; these are excluded from the subtotal.
Keep a separate arrival fund: deposit or bond, advance rent, temporary accommodation, furniture, flights and application costs are extra. Income tax, social contributions, car ownership, childcare and major travel are also excluded. Couples share some household costs but need larger food, transport and healthcare allowances.

Australian cities generally support remote work well, but broadband quality is address-specific and mobile coverage weakens in remote areas. UK teams can require early-morning or evening overlap, while FIFO sites may restrict personal connectivity.
Technology type and available speed can differ by property.

Australia spans several time zones and daylight-saving arrangements.
Prepare the identity, work, health, tax and practical evidence that unlocks the first month.
Carry secure originals and accessible copies. Do not place identity documents in an email inbox as the only backup.
